This constituency covers an approximate area of 214 square kilometers and the geographic coordinates of Kottarakkara is: 8°59'20.4"N 76°45'37.1"E.

In the 2021 Kerala Assembly elections, K N Balagopal of CPIM won in this constituency beating R Resmi of INC by a margin of 10814 votes which was 7.26% of the total votes cast. In 2016, Adv. P.Aisha Potty of CPIM was the winner in this seat beating Adv.Savin Sathyan of INC by a margin of 42632 votes which was 28.32% of the total votes polled in the constituency. In the 2011 Assembly elections, Adv:P.Aisha Potty of CPIM won this seat defeating Dr:N.N.Murali of KECB by a margin of 20592 votes which was 14.98% of the total votes polled for the seat.
