This constituency covers an approximate area of 139 square kilometers and the geographic coordinates of Thavanur is: 10°49'00.1"N 75°58'28.6"E.

In 2016, Dr. K.T. Jaleel of IND was the winner in this seat beating Ifthiquarudheen. Master of INC by a margin of 17064 votes which was 12.01% of the total votes polled in the constituency. In the 2011 Assembly elections, Dr.K.T. Jaleel of IND won this seat defeating Adv. V.V. Prakash of INC by a margin of 6854 votes which was 5.6% of the total votes polled for the seat.
