Madurai Central Assembly constituency comprises the following areas of Madurai district in the South region of Tamil Nadu: Madurai South Taluk (Part) Madurai (M Corp.) Ward No.1, 21 to 38 and 40 to 42.

This constituency covers an approximate area of 9 square kilometers and the geographic coordinates of Madurai Central is: 9°55'23.9"N 78°06'20.9"E.

According to data released by the Election Commission of India, In 2021, this seat registered a turnout of 61.03%, while it was 65.21% in 2016, and 74.82% in 2011.

In the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Palanivel Thiaga Rajan of DMK won in this constituency beating Jothi Muthuramalingam N of AIADMK by a margin of 34176 votes which was 23.09% of the total votes cast. In 2016, Palanivel Thiagarajan of DMK was the winner in this seat beating Jeyabal M of AIADMK by a margin of 5762 votes which was 3.79% of the total votes polled in the constituency. In the 2011 Assembly elections, Sundarrajan R of DMDK won this seat defeating Syed Ghouse Basha S of DMK by a margin of 19560 votes which was 13.57% of the total votes polled for the seat.
