Thanjavur Assembly constituency comprises the following areas of Thanjavur district in the Kaveri Delta region of Tamil Nadu: Thanjavur Taluk (Part) Pudupattinam, Avusahibthottam, Kadakadappai, Melachittakadu, Pinnainallur, Pulianthoppu and Pillaiyarpatti villages. Thanjavur (M), Neelagiri (CT), Nanjikottai (CT) and Vallam (TP).

This constituency covers an approximate area of 95 square kilometers and the geographic coordinates of Thanjavur is: 10°45'29.9"N 79°07'08.8"E.

In the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Neelamegam T K G of DMK won in this constituency beating Arivudainambi V of AIADMK by a margin of 47149 votes which was 24.44% of the total votes cast. In 2016, M. Rangaswamy of AIADMK was the winner in this seat beating B.Anjugam of DMK by a margin of 26874 votes which was 14.41% of the total votes polled in the constituency. In the 2011 Assembly elections, M.Rengasamy of AIADMK won this seat defeating S.N.M.Ubayadullah of DMK by a margin of 7329 votes which was 4.91% of the total votes polled for the seat.
