This constituency covers an approximate area of 251 square kilometers and the geographic coordinates of Ghatal is: 22°39'35.6"N 87°41'21.5"E.

In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, Sital Kapat of BJP won in this constituency beating Shankar Dolai of TMC by a margin of 966 votes which was 0.43% of the total votes cast. In 2016, Shankar Dolai of TMC was the winner in this seat beating Kamal Chandra Dolui of CPIM by a margin of 19479 votes which was 9% of the total votes polled in the constituency. In the 2011 Assembly elections, Shankar Dolai of TMC won this seat defeating Chhabi Pakhira of CPIM by a margin of 16277 votes which was 8.39% of the total votes polled for the seat.
