Bishunpur comprises of the following areas of Gumla district in the South Jharkhand region of Jharkhand: Bishunpur and Ghaghra police stations and Gumla police station (excluding Gumla municipality and Gram Panchayats Hurhuria, Ghatagaon, Asani, Chandali, Telgaon, Pugu, Bangaru, Karaundi, Dumardih and Murkunda) in Gumla sub-division; and Senha police station in Lohardaga sub­division.

This constituency covers an approximate area of 1508.85 square kilometers and the geographic coordinates of Sabalagadh is: 23°17'22.2"N 84°27'47.5"E.

A total of four Assembly constituencies in the state of Jharkhand share borders with Bishunpur constituency, which are: Manika, Lohardaga, Sisai, Gumla. This constituency shares an inter-state border with .

In the 2019 Jharkhand Assembly elections, Chamra Linda of JMM won in this constituency beating Ashok Oraon of BJP by a margin of 17,382 votes which was 10.57% of the total votes cast. In 2014, Chamra Linda of JMM was the winner in this seat beating Samir Oraon of BJP by a margin of 10,843 votes which was 7.37% of the total votes polled in the constituency. In the 2009 Assembly elections, Chamra Linda of RAKAP won this seat defeating Shiv Kumar Bhagat of INC by a margin of 16,710 votes which was 13.9% of the total votes polled for the seat.
