Gumla comprises of the following areas of Gumla district in the South Jharkhand region of Jharkhand: Gumla municipality, Gram Panchayats Hurhuria, Ghatagaon, Asani, Chandali, Telgaon, Pugu, Bangaru, Karaundi, Dumardih and Murkunda in Gumla police station and Raidih, Chainpur and Dumri police stations in Gumla sub-division.

This constituency covers an approximate area of 1734.6 square kilometers and the geographic coordinates of Sabalagadh is: 23°04'22.8"N 84°19'15.2"E.

A total of three Assembly constituencies in the state of Jharkhand share borders with Gumla constituency, which are: Simdega, Bishunpur, Manika. This constituency shares an inter-state border with Balrampur-Ramanujganj and Jashpur districts of Chhattisgarh.

In the 2019 Jharkhand Assembly elections, Bhushan Tirkey of JMM won in this constituency beating Mishir Kujur of BJP by a margin of 7,667 votes which was 05.45% of the total votes cast. In 2014, Shivshankar Oraon of BJP was the winner in this seat beating Bhushan Tirkey of JMM by a margin of 4,032 votes which was 3.11% of the total votes polled in the constituency. In the 2009 Assembly elections, Kamlesh Oraon of BJP won this seat defeating Bhushan Tirkey of JMM by a margin of 12,087 votes which was 11.7% of the total votes polled for the seat.
