Potka comprises of the following areas of East Singhbhum district in the South Jharkhand region of Jharkhand: Potka police station, Gram Panchayats Palasbani, Asta Koyali, Nunia, Kumarasol, Barakanjiya, Bornaro Bangoriya and Darnudih in Musabani police station, Bagbera Town and Gram Panchayats Karandih-Purihasa, Hargarghutu, Bagber a and village 1167-Kitadih in Jugsalai police station in Dhalbhum sub­division.

This constituency covers an approximate area of 927.84 square kilometers and the geographic coordinates of Sabalagadh is: 22°30'56.2"N 86°16'31.4"E.

A total of four Assembly constituencies in the state of Jharkhand share borders with Potka constituency, which are: Saraikella, Jamshedpur East, Jugsalai, Ghatsila. This constituency shares an inter-state border with Mayurbhanj district of Odisha.

In the 2019 Jharkhand Assembly elections, Sanjib Sardar of JMM won in this constituency beating Menka Sardar of BJP by a margin of 43,110 votes which was 21.65% of the total votes cast. In 2014, Menaka Sardar of BJP was the winner in this seat beating Sanjib Sardar of JMM by a margin of 6,706 votes which was 3.61% of the total votes polled in the constituency. In the 2009 Assembly elections, Menaka Sardar of BJP won this seat defeating Subodh Singh Sardar of INC by a margin of 15,710 votes which was 11.89% of the total votes polled for the seat.
