Poonjar Assembly constituency comprises the following areas of Kottayam district in the Travancore region of Kerala: Erumeli, Koottickal, Mundakayam, Parathode Panchayats in Kanjirappally Taluk and Erattupetta, Poonjar, Poonjar Thekkekara, Teekoy and Thidanad Panchayats in Meenachil Taluk.

This constituency covers an approximate area of 413 square kilometers and the geographic coordinates of Poonjar is: 9°34'09.1"N 76°51'28.8"E.

In the 2021 Kerala Assembly elections, Adv Sebastian Kulathunkal of KCM won in this constituency beating P C George Plathottam of KJS by a margin of 16817 votes which was 12.05% of the total votes cast. In 2016, P C George Plathottam of IND was the winner in this seat beating Georgekutty Augusty of KCM by a margin of 27821 votes which was 19.09% of the total votes polled in the constituency. In the 2011 Assembly elections, P C George, Plathottam of KCM won this seat defeating Adv Mohan Thomas of IND by a margin of 15704 votes which was 13.33% of the total votes polled for the seat.
