Punalur Assembly constituency comprises the following areas of Kollam district in the Travancore region of Kerala: Punalur Municipality and Anchal, Ariyankavu, Edamulakkal, Eroor, Karavaloor, Kulathupuzha and Thenmala Panchayats in Pathanapuram Taluk.

This constituency covers an approximate area of 929 square kilometers and the geographic coordinates of Punalur is: 8°57'09.4"N 77°04'17.8"E.

In the 2021 Kerala Assembly elections, P S Supal of CPI won in this constituency beating Abdurahiman Randathani of IUML by a margin of 37057 votes which was 25.46% of the total votes cast. In 2016, Adv.K.Raju of CPI was the winner in this seat beating Dr.A.Younus Kunju of IUML by a margin of 33582 votes which was 23.24% of the total votes polled in the constituency. In the 2011 Assembly elections, Adv.K.Raju of CPI won this seat defeating Adv.Johnson Abraham of INC by a margin of 18005 votes which was 13.51% of the total votes polled for the seat.
