Kilvelur Assembly constituency comprises the following areas of Nagapattinam district in the Kaveri Delta region of Tamil Nadu: Kilvelur Taluk Nagapattinam Taluk (Part) Aabaranadari, Pappakovil, Vadakkupoigainallur, Karuvalangadai, Orathur, Agaraorathur, Puduchery, Alangudi, Vadugachery, Mahadanam, Vadavoor, Therkupoigainallur, Kurichi, Agalangan and Sembiyanmahadevi villages. Thirukkuvalai Taluk (Part) Thenmarudur, Aadhamangalan, Anakkudi, Vadakkupanaiyur, Therkupanaiyur, Valivalam, Kodiyalathur, Paangal, Panangadi, Kolappadu, Kargudi, Thirukuvalai, Melavazhakarai, Madapuram, Meenamanallur, Vazhakarai, Esanur, Thiruvaimur, Ettugudi, Vallam, Keeramber, Mutharasapuram, Katchanagaram, Kothangudi, Tholuthur and Sithaimur villages.

This constituency covers an approximate area of 451 square kilometers and the geographic coordinates of Kilvelur is: 10°40'38.3"N 79°45'54.0"E.

In the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Nagaimaali V P of CPIM won in this constituency beating Vadivel Ravanan S of PMK by a margin of 16985 votes which was 11.95% of the total votes cast. In 2016, Mathivanan.U of DMK was the winner in this seat beating Meena.N of AIADMK by a margin of 10170 votes which was 7.37% of the total votes polled in the constituency. In the 2011 Assembly elections, Mahalingam P of CPIM won this seat defeating Mathivanan U of DMK by a margin of 724 votes which was 0.6% of the total votes polled for the seat.
