Kolathur Assembly constituency comprises the following areas of Chennai district in the North region of Tamil Nadu: Chennai (M Corp.) (Part) Chennai (M Corp.) Ward No. 50 to 54 and 62.

This constituency covers an approximate area of 10 square kilometers and the geographic coordinates of Kolathur is: 13°07'04.1"N 80°13'30.4"E.

According to data released by the Election Commission of India, In 2021, this seat registered a turnout of 61.04%, while it was 64.79% in 2016, and 68.47% in 2011.

In the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, M K Stalin of DMK won in this constituency beating Aadirajaram of AIADMK by a margin of 70384 votes which was 40.95% of the total votes cast. In 2016, Stalin.M.K of DMK was the winner in this seat beating Prabhakar.J.C.D of AIADMK by a margin of 37730 votes which was 22.42% of the total votes polled in the constituency. In the 2011 Assembly elections, Stalin M.K. of DMK won this seat defeating Sadai.Sa. Duraisamy of AIADMK by a margin of 2819 votes which was 1.99% of the total votes polled for the seat.
