This constituency covers an approximate area of 11 square kilometers and the geographic coordinates of Madurai South is: 9°54'44.3"N 78°08'00.6"E.

According to data released by the Election Commission of India, In 2021, this seat registered a turnout of 63.8%, while it was 66.85% in 2016, and 75.8% in 2011.

In the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Boominathan M of DMK won in this constituency beating Saravanan S S of AIADMK by a margin of 6515 votes which was 4.45% of the total votes cast. In 2016, Saravanan .S.S. of AIADMK was the winner in this seat beating Balachandran .M of DMK by a margin of 23763 votes which was 16.21% of the total votes polled in the constituency. In the 2011 Assembly elections, Annadurai R of CPIM won this seat defeating Varadharajan S P of INC by a margin of 45451 votes which was 33.55% of the total votes polled for the seat.
