Papanasam Assembly constituency comprises the following areas of Thanjavur district in the Kaveri Delta region of Tamil Nadu: Papanasam Taluk Kumbakonam Taluk (Part) Nagagudi, Valaiyapettai, Thiruvalanjuli, Sundaraperumalkoil- Thenpathi, Vellalapillayampettai, Thiruvalanjuli Thattimal, Patteeswaram and Vaniyakarambai villages. Swamimalai (TP).

This constituency covers an approximate area of 421 square kilometers and the geographic coordinates of Papanasam is: 10°50'21.1"N 79°15'03.2"E.

In the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Dr Jawahirullah M H of DMK won in this constituency beating Gopinathan K of AIADMK by a margin of 16273 votes which was 8.31% of the total votes cast. In 2016, Doraikkannu R of AIADMK was the winner in this seat beating Loganathan T R of INC by a margin of 24365 votes which was 13.35% of the total votes polled in the constituency. In the 2011 Assembly elections, R. Doraikkannu of AIADMK won this seat defeating M. Ramkumar of INC by a margin of 18007 votes which was 11.24% of the total votes polled for the seat.
