Chowdhary Zulfkar Ali, founder member and vice-president of the Jammu Kashmir Apni Party, joined the BJP ahead of the elections. An influential Gujjar leader, he hails from Rajouri district in the Pir Panjal region and has been a two-time MLA from the Darhal seat, which he first won in 2008 and retained in 2014. He has also served as a Cabinet minister in the PDP-BJP government led by Mehbooba Mufti and held key portfolios. Ali is facing his nephew his nephew and NC candidate Javaid Iqbad Choudhary. The others in the contest from this seat are Guftar Ahmed of the PDP and Abdul Rashid of the BSP.
