Firebrand activist-turned-politician Akhil Gogoi, president of the Raijor Dal, is seeking re-election from the Sivasagar constituency in the 2026 Assam Assembly polls, where he remains one of the most prominent anti-establishment voices.

Gogoi shot to electoral prominence in 2021 when he won the Sivasagar seat as an independent candidate while lodged in jail on sedition charges linked to protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA). His victory was widely seen as a reflection of grassroots support built through years of activism.

He had founded the Raijor Dal in 2020 ahead of the Assembly elections, positioning it as a regional alternative rooted in protest politics and local issues. The party has since joined a broader opposition alliance and is now part of a six-party bloc that includes the Congress for the 2026 polls.

Gogoi remains the party’s lone MLA and its central face. According to his latest election affidavit, he continues to have no immovable assets, unchanged from his 2021 declaration.

As he contests again from Sivasagar, Gogoi’s campaign is likely to hinge on his image as a grassroots mobiliser and a persistent critic of both state and central governments, even as he navigates the transition from activist politics to a more structured electoral role.
