Debabrata Saikia

Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing Assam Assembly, Debabrata Saikia is seeking a fourth consecutive term from Nazira in the 2026 polls, a constituency long regarded as his family’s political stronghold.

Saikia has represented Nazira since 2011, carrying forward a legacy built by his father, former Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia, and his mother, former minister Hemoprava Saikia, both of whom had earlier held the seat. A senior Congress leader with strong organisational grounding, Saikia has played a key role in maintaining the party’s relevance in the region despite the BJP’s expanding footprint. However, his most recent win came by a narrow margin of under 500 votes, signalling a more competitive political landscape. In the 2026 election, Saikia faces the dual challenge of countering anti-incumbency and holding on to a seat that, while historically loyal to the Congress, is now witnessing a more aggressive push from the BJP backed by its development narrative.
