Himanta Biswa Sarma

BJP | Jalukbari | Assam
Awaited

Senior BJP leader and incumbent Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is seeking re-election from Jalukbari in the 2026 Assam Assembly polls, aiming for a sixth consecutive term from a constituency he has dominated for over two decades.

The 57-year-old leader has represented Jalukbari since 2001, steadily consolidating his political hold. His electoral journey in the seat began with a setback in 1996, when he contested as a Congress candidate and lost to AGP stalwart Bhrigu Kumar Phukan by around 17,000 votes. He reversed that defeat in 2001, winning the seat by about 10,000 votes, and has since not looked back.

Over successive elections, Sarma’s victory margins have grown significantly, underlining his entrenched position in the constituency. In 2021, he registered his biggest win yet, with a margin of over 1 lakh votes.

A key political strategist in Assam since the mid-2000s, Sarma played a pivotal role in shaping electoral outcomes across the Northeast. After switching from the Congress to the BJP in 2015, he was widely credited as one of the architects of the party’s expansion in the region, including its landmark victory in Assam and subsequent consolidation in 2021, when he assumed office as Chief Minister.

Academically, Sarma holds a doctorate in Political Science from Gauhati University and is also a law graduate.

According to his 2026 election affidavit, the combined assets of Sarma and his wife, entrepreneur Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, have more than doubled to Rs 35.16 crore from Rs 17.27 crore in 2021. Sarma’s own assets are entirely movable, valued at Rs 2.36 crore in 2026, up from Rs 1.72 crore earlier. His wife, who is Managing Director of Pride East Entertainment, holds both movable and immovable assets worth Rs 32.79 crore, compared to Rs 16.19 crore in 2021.

Candidate Info: Himanta Biswa Sarma is the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate contesting from Jalukbari (General) Assembly constituency for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. This male candidate is 57 years of age, according to the election affidavit submitted to the Election Commission of India.
