Outgoing Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary is seeking re-election from the Panery constituency as a BJP candidate, looking to consolidate his position after a successful switch to the party ahead of the last polls.
A prominent Bodo leader, Daimary’s political journey reflects both grassroots struggle and long public service. Born in Baksa district to a farmer and a mahut, he supported his family in his early years by working at a tea stall. He later emerged as a student leader and went on to play a role in efforts toward peace and stability in the Bodoland region.
Daimary began his legislative career as an MLA from 2001 to 2006 and returned to electoral politics again between 2014 and 2020. He also had a significant stint in Parliament, serving as a Rajya Sabha MP from 2008 to 2014 and again from 2014 to 2020 as a member of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF). He was re-elected to the Upper House in 2021 after joining the BJP in November 2020, but resigned from the Rajya Sabha to contest the Assembly elections from Panery, which he won.
Now contesting again from the same seat, Daimary represents the BJP’s continued outreach in the Bodoland region, where his personal trajectory — from modest beginnings to key political roles — adds to his profile as a mass leader.
Academically, Daimary completed his schooling in Assam before pursuing higher education, including a postgraduate degree from Madurai Kamaraj University.
